My name is Carl Sassenrath, I live on a small ranch and vineyard in the Calpella area, just north of Ukiah.
On June 20th, I watched the lightning storm that I knew it was going to create a problem for all of us in the Ukiah and Mendocino County areas.
As a resident, with the fires just over the hills to the west and north, I’ve found useful information difficult to locate — because San Francisco media does not cover this far north, and CalFire is too busy fighting the fires to give the public any useful data.
Therefore, I am providing this blog as service to other Ukiah and Mendocino residents who seek information about the current situation.
PS: I am also the chairman for TIA, Ukiah’s free local TV channels… which are also located high on the top of the surrounding mountains. So, lightning and fires are a big problem for us.

Who is responsible for the forest fuel load situation that seems to make the currrent situation more difficult? What do responsible folks do about it?

There are two mindsets: 1) the landowners, who are normally in favor of decreasing the load, and 2) the naturalists, in favor of leaving it as natural as possible.
Personally, I use the German “groom the forest” method. Remove a lot of the lower level burnable materials, but leave the rest as is.
